You do not need a kitchen full of double boilers, a filling machine or a warehouse lease to start a pain relief balm brand. You need a customer, a brand and a maker you trust.
This guide walks through what it actually takes to launch a camphor and menthol balm under your own name, without building a factory: the decisions, the compliance basics, a realistic timeline and the costs to think about.
I am Cole Stegman, founder of Rematch. I have made and refined our formula for 12 years and we make it by hand in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our private label program exists because a lot of people asked if they could put their own name on it.
Step 1: Start with the customer, not the jar
The brands that work start with an audience that already trusts them:
- A pickleball or golf brand adding a recovery product
- A physical therapy or chiropractic practice with a front desk
- A spa, resort or studio with a retail shelf
- A coach or creator with an audience over 50
- A boutique, pharmacy or natural grocer building a house brand
If you can name the first 50 people who will buy, you are ready. If you cannot, start there before you start with a label.
Step 2: Choose the product
Private label lets you start with a proven, finished product. With Rematch, the options are:
Original 2 oz jar
Camphor 6.5% and menthol 1.75%, made with organic oils and butters. The flagship and the best first product for most brands.
Sensitive 2 oz jar
A fragrance-free comfort balm with no camphor or menthol. A cosmetic, not a drug, and a good second product for a line.
Travel 1 oz jar
The pocket size of the Original. The easiest add-on and impulse buy.
Cream 4 oz tube
Camphor 6.5% and menthol 4% in a quicker-spreading cream. Available on preorder for private label.
Start with one product. Add the second once the first has sold through.
Step 3: Understand the compliance basics
A camphor and menthol balm is an over-the-counter drug under the FDA external analgesic monograph. That sounds intimidating, but the rules are written down, and a good maker follows them every day.
What you need to know:
- The label needs a Drug Facts panel with actives and their purpose, uses, warnings, directions and inactive ingredients, in a standard order.
- Uses must follow the monograph wording: for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises and sprains.
- No disease or cure claims on the label, your website or social posts.
- No promises about how long relief lasts.
With Rematch private label, we review the Drug Facts panel and front-panel claims on every label before print. Your marketing off the label stays your responsibility, so keep it to the monograph language.
Step 4: Decide how much you want to handle
There are two ways to work with us.
ALL-IN: send your logo, we do everything else
Label design in your brand look, label printing, filling, lidding, labeling, lot coding, Drug Facts review, and your finished product packed and shipped to your door. You approve one proof. For a full walkthrough, read Private Label ALL-IN: done-for-you balm and cream.
A la carte: bring your own labels
You supply print-ready labels and we fill, label, lot code and ship. Add only what you need: label design, label printing, shrink bands or custom cartons.
Most first-time brands choose ALL-IN because it removes the hardest part: sourcing printers and getting the label right.
Step 5: Start small
The biggest mistake new brands make is ordering too much. Many manufacturers require hundreds or thousands of units per product, which turns a test into a bet.
Rematch private label starts at one case of 24 units. That lets you:
- put real product in front of real customers quickly
- learn which size and price work
- reorder based on sales, not guesses

Step 6: Plan the timeline
A realistic launch looks like this:
- Day 1. Apply on the private label page.
- Within 1 business day. Quote and portal access.
- Week 1. Label proof (ALL-IN includes design and two revisions).
- Week 2. Proof approved, Drug Facts review, print.
- Weeks 3 to 5. Filling, labeling, lot coding. Finished product ships to you.
About five weeks from application to product in hand. Cream runs follow the cream launch.
Step 7: Price for a healthy margin
Set your retail price so your brand earns a real margin. Our partner portal shows what you make per jar at suggested retail for every size and order tier, using the ALL-IN unit price, so you can see your margin before you order.
What you need to have ready
- Your logo, ideally as a vector file.
- Brand colors or examples of a look you like.
- Your business name and address for the distributor line.
- A rough first quantity.
That is it. No equipment, no lease, no formulation work.
Start your brand
Apply on the private label page, choose ALL-IN or a la carte, and you will hear back within one business day with your quote, portal access and sample kit details. MOQ is 24 units.
Already have a shop and just want to carry Rematch? The wholesale program starts at one case of 12.
FAQ
Do I need a factory to start a balm brand?
No. With private label, an established maker produces a finished, compliant product under your brand. You focus on customers and marketing.
What is the minimum to start with Rematch private label?
One case of 24 units of your label.
Do I need an FDA license to sell a camphor and menthol balm?
Retailers do not need a special license to sell an OTC monograph topical analgesic. The product must be made and labeled correctly, which is what a compliant private label maker handles.
How long does it take to launch?
About 3 to 4 weeks from label approval. With ALL-IN, label design adds about a week before approval.
What is the difference between ALL-IN and a la carte?
ALL-IN is done for you: label design, printing, filling, lot coding, Drug Facts review and shipping. A la carte is for brands with their own print-ready labels; you add only what you need.
